For too long, political strategists have written off Washington and Greene Counties in southwestern Pennsylvania, entrenching a power imbalance between the fossil fuel corporations calling the shots and the residents paying the cost with their health and homes. Coalfield Justice Action (CJA)—a new 501(c)(4) built on years of deep community organizing at the intersection of longwall mining, fracking, plastics, and data centers—and its affiliated Coalfield Power PAC are changing that calculus. This November, CJA is engaging their base in a critical state senate race (SD-46) through member-led strategic endorsements, a broad field program, targeted media, and community events to build the governing power needed to tackle climate and environmental justice crises while reflecting the values of our rural, working-class region.

WNN members North Carolina Housing Table and Texans for Housing are advancing pro-housing, pro-climate land use reforms in their deep-red state legislatures. By building unique, bipartisan, strange bedfellow coalitions around these reforms, they have a clear opportunity to achieve climate-friendly reforms where other environmental policies are dead on arrival. These policies would shift housing growth toward existing, walkable, transit-connected communities, reducing per capita emissions and fighting suburban sprawl. Through community organizing, coalition-building, and direct advocacy, the NC Housing Table and Texans for Housing are overcoming the power of NIMBYism and achieving groundbreaking pro-climate progress in unlikely places.
