1.5°Climate hosted an educational briefing on the fastest-growing driver of U.S. electricity demand: data centers. The session examined how rapid AI and cloud-computing expansion is straining the grid, increasing electricity costs, and threatening state climate targets. Speakers outlined emerging risks, the key decisions facing regulators and utilities, and the strategic interventions needed to ensure this surge accelerates—rather than obstructs—the clean energy transition. While the event did not include fundraising, it set the stage for our upcoming quick-pitch sessions spotlighting state and regional data center campaign opportunities.

Carbon Capture & Storage is often elevated by industry as a climate solution, but it can just as easily serve as a climate foil. This educational event explores the opportunities and risks associated with carbon capture and storage. Notably, this field is actively soliciting philanthropic contributions despite being largely funded by the oil and gas sector, and we encourage philanthropists to exercise caution when considering support for this space.

Evergreen Action provided a high level overview of two positive developments coming out of Washington, D.C., and one extremely troubling development in regards to the debt ceiling debate potentially putting at risk many parts of the Inflation Reduction act. Some great questions were asked by members who dove into some of the more wonky aspects of the EPA proposed carbon standard for power plants from methane to NOx coverage as well as carbon capture and storage.
